Inclusive Ballet Teaching: How Every Dancer Belongs in Your Studio

Joy in ballet is impossible if you don't feel like you belong! After teaching thousands of students over 27 years, including transgender dancers, I've learned that creating welcoming spaces doesn't mean compromising technique. While ballet gives us beautiful traditions, we're breaking new ground in making sure everyone can thrive.

The Foundation: Setting An Inclusive Tone Creating truly welcoming environments requires intentional strategies from day one. My approach begins with simple but powerful communication choices that establish safety while maintaining professional standards. Despite teaching in an extremely conservative area, thoughtful language choices (like "my pronouns are she/her. You are welcome to share your pronouns with me if you want") have never received pushback - students accept inclusive practices as naturally as they do French terminology.

Beyond Traditional Language Ballet's rich traditions include language that doesn't always serve our students. My curriculum addresses this through strategic vocabulary choices that maintain technical precision while opening artistic possibilities. For example, describing movement qualities through their dynamic characteristics rather than gendered expectations allows all students to explore their full artistic range. I also use "bravura steps" instead of "men's steps" to avoid making any student feel like they are not welcome to try the movement.

The Unexpected Benefits When students understand they have choices in their movement, they become more thoughtful about every aspect of their dancing. Students empowered to explore different movement qualities this way develop stronger technique because they're making conscious artistic choices rather than simply following instructions.

Physical Safety and Student Agency Creating inclusive spaces requires rethinking traditional approaches to correction, spacing, and uniform policies. My approach balances technical clarity with student autonomy, ensuring that safety - both physical and emotional - supports students as they pursue excellence.

Advanced students benefit from understanding and being offered the opportunity to learn both partnering roles, though choice remains paramount. This approach deepens technical comprehension while fostering the empathy and respect essential for collaborative artistry.

This thoughtful integration of inclusion and technical excellence represents the comprehensive approach that transforms both studio culture and artistic outcomes.

This pioneering approach to inclusive excellence creates environments where every dancer can access their full artistic potential. My curricula provide the complete frameworks that integrate welcoming practices with technical excellence - proving that belonging and high standards work beautifully together.
